Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico on Thursday in a Round of 16 encounter at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with a quarter-final place at stake.
The Nigerian side enters the knockout match with renewed confidence following a 3–1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR in their final group-stage fixture.
Nigeria finished second in Group B with six points from three matches. After losing 2–1 to Poland in their opening game, the Flamingos responded with a 2–0 win over Puerto Rico before defeating the North Koreans to secure qualification.
Mexico also finished second in its group after recovering from an opening 2–0 defeat to Spain. The team subsequently defeated Chile 3–1 and edged Australia 1–0 to reach the last 16.
Ahead of the encounter, Nigeria Football Federation Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, visited the team during training in Rabat and urged the players to remain focused on the challenge ahead.
Head coach Hakeem Busari will have his full 21-player squad available for selection, providing options as Nigeria seeks to advance.
The Flamingos won bronze at the 2022 edition in India, while Mexico finished third at the 2025 tournament in Morocco. Both teams will therefore be seeking another deep run in the competition.
With knockout football leaving little room for mistakes, Nigeria’s defensive discipline and ability to build on its recent attacking performance will be important in determining whether the team progresses to the quarter-finals.
