Youths in Ogun West Senatorial District have protested the deteriorating condition of the Abeokuta–Olorunda–Imeko Road, urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to fulfil his January 2026 pledge to reconstruct the road.
The protesters, under the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ogun West Senatorial District, gathered along the Alamala axis of the road on Saturday, carrying placards to draw attention to the hardship caused by its poor condition.
Some of the placards read, “Good road is our right, not a privilege,” “Our road is a death trap, FG save us,” and “No good road, no progress.”
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the State Vice Chairman of the council in Ogun West, Kehinde Olorunjubelo, called on the governor to provide an update on the project and take concrete steps towards its implementation.
Olorunjubelo recalled that Abiodun, during the commissioning of the Afon Township Road in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area on January 28, 2026, directed the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to prepare an estimate for the reconstruction of the Abeokuta–Olorunda–Imeko Road.
According to him, the governor had promised that the estimate would be presented at the next State Executive Council meeting, with construction expected to begin immediately.
However, the youth leader lamented that several months had passed without visible progress on the promised reconstruction, while the road had continued to deteriorate.
He said the poor condition of the road was affecting residents, traders, farmers and students who depended on it for their daily activities.
According to him, commuters faced difficult journeys, while the damaged sections increased transportation costs, vehicle maintenance expenses and the risk of road accidents.
Olorunjubelo urged both the state and Federal Governments to intervene urgently by assessing the road, repairing its most dangerous sections and providing a clear timeline for its rehabilitation and reconstruction.
He also called for adequate drainage systems and erosion-control measures to prevent further deterioration.
“The people of Ogun West have heard your promise, and they are looking forward to seeing it translated into action. We respectfully appeal for urgent intervention because the safety, livelihoods, and well-being of our people cannot continue to wait,” he said.
The youth leader maintained that the protest was not politically motivated but was aimed at addressing the difficulties faced by communities that rely on the road for transportation, commerce, education and access to essential services.
He urged the state government to communicate the status of the project and explain the steps being taken to ensure its execution.
Olorunjubelo also appealed to the media to sustain public attention on the road, while encouraging youths in the area to remain peaceful and pursue their demands through constructive engagement with the authorities.
He said the council would continue engaging relevant authorities until meaningful progress was made towards the reconstruction of the road.
The Abeokuta–Olorunda–Imeko Road connects communities in Yewa North and Imeko-Afon local government areas with the state capital. It also links Nigeria to the Republic of Benin through Ilara town in Imeko-Afon, making it an important route for commercial activities.
