Porridge Makes a Comeback as Fibre-Focused Eating Fuels Demand for Oats

Porridge is enjoying renewed popularity in the United Kingdom as growing interest in fibre-rich diets, creative toppings and nostalgic comfort food brings the traditional breakfast staple back into the spotlight.

The trend is changing how consumers prepare and eat oats, with restaurants and food businesses introducing inventive combinations that range from fruit and nut butters to savoury toppings such as mushrooms and pesto.

Alex Hely-Hutchinson, founder of London porridge restaurant 26 Grains, describes the dish as “comfort in a bowl”, saying its simplicity offers people a moment of calm in increasingly busy lives.

The growing interest is also reflected in retail sales. Searches for organic jumbo oats on Ocado have risen by 98 per cent year on year, while sales of White’s jumbo oats have increased by 56 per cent.

The shift is being encouraged by fibremaxxing, a social media-driven trend promoting higher fibre consumption. The UK’s National Health Service recommends that adults consume 30 grammes of fibre daily, but average intake remains around 18 grammes, according to the British Dietetic Association.

Oats contain soluble fibre, including beta-glucan, which supports digestive health and can help lower cholesterol.

Hedié Rhodes, founder of south London cereals bakery Husk & Honey, said porridge’s versatility allows people to customise meals according to their tastes and nutritional needs. Popular combinations include cinnamon and cranberry, as well as spiced apple.

Clare Coghill, founder of Café Cùil on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, champions coarser pinhead oats, which she says celebrate Scotland’s porridge-making heritage. Her café serves the dish with seasonal ingredients, including poached pears and hazelnut praline.

Food innovators expect the trend to expand beyond breakfast, with savoury porridge drawing inspiration from dishes such as Chinese congee and Indian kitchari.

The revival highlights how traditional foods can find new commercial appeal when changing dietary priorities meet personalisation and nostalgia.
