Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), operator of Nigeria’s first commercial gold mine, has called for increased investment, effective regulation and stronger community partnerships to unlock the country’s mining potential.
The company made the call during the 11th Nigerian Mining Week, held in Abuja from October 12 to 14, 2026, where it participated as a Diamond Sponsor.
Speaking at the main conference, SROL Country Manager Austin Menegbo said the Segilola Gold Mine had demonstrated that commercially viable gold mining operations could be established and sustained in Nigeria.
He stressed that translating the country’s mineral wealth into economic benefits required patient investment, technical expertise, credible regulatory processes and partnerships with host communities.
Menegbo said Nigeria could attract more investors, create jobs, generate export revenue and develop local skills by establishing a clear and reliable framework for responsible mining.
The company also shared its operational experience through two technical sessions. One examined its approach to water management, recycling and conservation, while the other explored lessons from developing a commercial gold mine and opportunities to expand the industry.
Through its exhibition booth, SROL engaged stakeholders on environmental protection, workplace safety and host community development.
The event, organised by the Miners Association of Nigeria in partnership with PwC Nigeria and hosted by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, focused on unlocking investment and growth through partnerships.
Nigeria’s mining sector remains an avenue for economic diversification, but expanding its contribution will depend on sustained investment, sound regulation, environmental responsibility and greater local participation.
