Goldman Sachs Says US Data Centre Expansion Remains Strong Despite Opposition

The rapid expansion of data centres in the United States is expected to continue through 2027 despite growing political and community opposition, according to a new assessment by Goldman Sachs.

The investment bank raised its forecast for US data centre capacity at the end of 2026 by 5 gigawatts to 64 GW, while cutting its 2027 estimate by 5 GW to 90 GW. It said the changes did not materially alter its broader outlook for continued expansion.

Data centres are becoming increasingly important as technology companies expand artificial intelligence services that require large amounts of computing power. Goldman expects US data centre electricity demand to increase by 38 per cent in 2026, equivalent to about 12 GW, and another 38 per cent, or 17 GW, in 2027.

The expansion is nevertheless facing resistance in communities concerned about electricity consumption, utility costs and other local effects. Public support has weakened significantly, with a June survey showing that only about one-third of Americans approve of the current pace of data centre construction.

Only 14 per cent said they would support a data centre being built in their community to support AI projects for major technology companies.

Despite the backlash, Goldman said project data indicates that opposition has so far had limited impact on the industry’s near-term growth trajectory.
