The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the 23 local government chairmen in the state to meet Governor Siminalayi Fubara as political reconciliation efforts continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting took place on Sunday at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The delegation included the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda.

The meeting came about two weeks after an earlier engagement between Wike’s political allies and Fubara’s supporters, aimed at improving relations between the two camps.

According to reports, the latest meeting was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen reconciliation and address the political disagreements that have divided the state’s leadership for more than two years.

The dispute between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, began shortly after the governor assumed office in 2023. The disagreement later extended to the State House of Assembly, with lawmakers making attempts to impeach the governor.

The crisis escalated in March 2025 when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of the governor, his deputy and members of the state legislature. The elected officials later returned to office after the emergency rule ended.

Although details of Sunday’s closed-door meeting were not officially disclosed, reports indicated that discussions focused on sustaining reconciliation and finding ways to accommodate Fubara’s supporters within the state’s emerging political arrangement.

The meeting also brought together key political figures associated with Wike, including local government chairmen and lawmakers, ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, questions remain over whether the renewed engagement will produce lasting peace and how Fubara’s loyalists will be represented in future political arrangements.

The development comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
