American boxer Brandon Figueroa has lost his World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight title after failing to meet the division’s weight limit ahead of his scheduled fight against Japan’s Tomoki Kameda in Las Vegas.
Figueroa weighed 127.4 pounds, exceeding the featherweight limit of 126 pounds by 1.4 pounds. The decision means his championship reign ends before his first title defense.
The fight is expected to proceed as scheduled, but the title is now vacant. Kameda can claim the championship if he defeats Figueroa, while a victory for the American will leave the belt unclaimed.
Kameda, 35, expressed frustration over his opponent’s failure to make weight, saying he had completed his own preparations and remained ready to compete for the title.
Figueroa, 29, won the WBA featherweight championship in February after defeating Britain’s Nick Ball in Liverpool.
The upcoming bout now carries additional significance for Kameda, who has the opportunity to become a world champion again after his extended absence from the ring.
