The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the arrest and arraignment of Dr Bashir Kurfi, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, accusing the Katsina State Government of intimidating academics over their comments on public affairs.

The union’s Sokoto Zone, led by its Zonal Chairman, Professor Abubakar Sabo Yabo, expressed concern that security agencies could be used to pressure academics for speaking about issues affecting society.

Kurfi was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services and arraigned over comments concerning insecurity in Katsina State. The case has drawn attention to the relationship between public criticism, law enforcement and academic freedom.

ASUU maintained that it supports the rule of law but insisted that legal procedures must not be used to suppress legitimate expression. The union called on the relevant authorities and the judiciary to ensure that Kurfi receives a fair hearing and that his rights are protected.

The union also urged the Katsina State Government to concentrate on addressing insecurity, economic hardship and challenges in the education sector rather than taking actions that could discourage academics from contributing to public debate.

The controversy highlights the importance of balancing accountability for public statements with the protection of freedom of expression. While allegations must be addressed through lawful procedures, transparent proceedings and respect for due process are essential to maintaining public confidence.

ASUU said it would continue monitoring the case and would respond if it found evidence that the lecturer had been treated unjustly.
