Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called for stronger engagement with retired military personnel, particularly in the North-East, to improve intelligence gathering and support ongoing security operations.
Oluyede made the call in Yola during an engagement meeting with military veterans from the North-East Zone. He said retired personnel possess valuable military experience, training and knowledge of local communities that could provide additional channels for gathering useful security information.
The CDS also assured veterans that increases in the salaries of serving soldiers would have a consequential effect on their pensions. He said the military leadership remained committed to improving the welfare of both serving personnel and retirees.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa, urged the Nigerian Army to harness data and artificial intelligence as strategic tools for improving intelligence, decision-making and operational effectiveness.
Speaking at the Army’s 4th Data Management and Record-Keeping Seminar in Abuja, Inuwa said AI would not replace military personnel but could help automate routine processes, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and enable officers to focus on critical responsibilities.
He also called for greater digital sovereignty and stronger military-civilian partnerships to develop indigenous technologies capable of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
