European automakers are facing intensifying competition from Chinese rivals as a record 20 Chinese car brands prepare to showcase their vehicles at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, highlighting China’s growing influence in Europe’s electric vehicle and hybrid markets.
The exhibition, scheduled for October 12 to 18 in Paris, France, brings together established Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Chery alongside newer entrants, including Aito and Avatr. The Chinese contingent is twice the size of the one at the previous show in 2024.
The expansion comes as Chinese manufacturers seek new markets amid weaker domestic demand and limited access to the United States. Their growing presence in Europe is challenging traditional manufacturers already grappling with high production costs, US tariffs and the expensive transition to electric vehicles.
Chinese brands accounted for 10.7 per cent of the European car market in the second quarter of 2026, up from 5.7 per cent a year earlier, according to industry research data.
European manufacturers are preparing to counter the competition with more affordable electric models and renewed investment in vehicle technology. Stellantis, for example, plans to revive the Citroën 2CV as an affordable electric car, while other manufacturers are reviewing production costs and product strategies.
The competition is also reshaping business relationships. Some European manufacturers are exploring partnerships with Chinese companies to gain access to electric vehicle technology and make better use of underutilised factories.
Brad Kunz, a partner at consultancy Grant Thornton Stax, said China’s limited access to the US market had increased the importance of Europe to its automotive industry.
The European Union has already imposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and is considering additional measures to strengthen local manufacturing.

The growing rivalry underscores a major shift in the global automotive industry, with manufacturers competing on price, technology and access to increasingly competitive electric vehicle markets.
