Political analyst Mahmud Jega has expressed concern over the level of preparedness of the ruling All Progressives Congress and opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Jega said the major political parties appeared inadequately prepared for the elections, raising questions about their organisation, strategies and readiness to compete effectively in the forthcoming polls.
His assessment comes as political activities gradually intensify across the country, with politicians and political parties positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The 2027 general elections are expected to feature contests for the presidency, governorships, National Assembly seats and state legislative positions.
The APC, which controls the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu, is expected to defend its position against opposition parties seeking to challenge its hold on power.
Meanwhile, opposition parties face the task of strengthening their structures, building alliances and presenting candidates capable of attracting voters across Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.
Jega’s comments highlight concerns about the capacity of political parties to conduct effective campaigns, mobilise supporters and develop clear programmes addressing the country’s major challenges.
Political observers have repeatedly emphasised the importance of internal party democracy, transparent candidate selection, credible campaign promises and effective grassroots mobilisation in determining the quality of electoral competition.
For the opposition, cooperation among parties and the ability to resolve internal disagreements could influence their preparations for the elections. However, differences in political interests, leadership ambitions and party structures may complicate efforts to establish a common front.
The ruling APC also faces the responsibility of maintaining party unity while addressing concerns about governance, economic conditions, insecurity and public confidence.
The Independent National Electoral Commission is responsible for organising the elections and providing the framework within which political parties and candidates must operate.
Beyond party preparations, the credibility of the 2027 elections will depend on effective electoral administration, compliance with electoral laws, peaceful campaigns and the willingness of political actors to respect the outcome of the polls.
Political parties are expected to intensify their consultations, organise conventions, select candidates in accordance with electoral regulations and communicate their policies to Nigerians as the elections approach.
Jega’s assessment has drawn attention to the need for parties to move beyond political declarations and demonstrate practical readiness for the electoral process.
With competition expected to increase in the coming months, the preparedness of the APC and opposition parties will remain an important issue in Nigeria’s political discussions ahead of 2027.
