Hitler’s Birthplace Reopens as Police Station in Bid to Counter Neo Nazi Symbolism

The house where Adolf Hitler was born has begun a new chapter after being officially reopened as a police station, marking Austria’s latest effort to prevent the site from becoming a destination for neo Nazi supporters.

the extensively renovated building in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn will serve as a regional police headquarters and training facility. Austrian officials said the decision was intended to give the property a clear public purpose while stripping it of any symbolic value associated with the Nazi dictator.

The yellow, 17th century building has been at the centre of political and legal disputes for years. The Austrian government expropriated the property in 2017 after a prolonged disagreement with its former owner, arguing that it was necessary to prevent the site from attracting extremist groups. The move was later upheld by Austria’s Constitutional Court.

Construction work has significantly altered the interior while preserving much of the building’s historic exterior. Authorities said the transformation into a police station reflects Austria’s commitment to confronting its Nazi past and preventing the glorification of Hitler or National Socialism.

Outside the building, a memorial stone continues to honour the victims of fascism and carries an inscription urging people to remember the millions who suffered under Nazi rule. Local officials said the memorial will remain an important reminder of the consequences of dictatorship and extremism.

The reopening comes as European governments continue efforts to combat the rise of far right extremism and preserve the historical memory of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
