AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric will continue playing international football for Croatia after confirming his availability for the country’s upcoming Nations League matches.
Modric, who turns 41 on Wednesday, had been expected to retire from international football after Croatia’s World Cup campaign. However, the veteran midfielder has decided to extend his international career under returning head coach Slaven Bilic.
Bilic, who coached Croatia between 2006 and 2012, was in charge when Modric made his senior international debut in March 2006.
Modric is Croatia’s most capped player with 202 appearances. He played a key role in the country’s run to the 2018 World Cup final, where he won the Golden Ball, and their third place finish at the 2022 World Cup.
His decision means he could feature in Croatia’s Nations League fixtures against the Czech Republic, Spain and England later this year, including a home clash with England on October 3 and the return fixture at Wembley on November 12.
Bilic welcomed Modric’s decision, praising the midfielder’s influence both on and off the pitch and expressing his ambition to keep Croatia among the world’s top teams.
