The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disengaged some street sweepers, their supervisors and the service provider responsible for their operations over alleged indiscriminate waste dumping along the Oworonshoki Berger axis.
The action followed investigations and surveillance which reportedly established that the affected sweepers were dumping waste on the median, an identified waste blackspot.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the sweepers confessed to the act during investigations.
He said the affected personnel and service provider were disengaged to demonstrate the Authority’s commitment to maintaining environmental standards across Lagos.
In a related development, LAWMA enforcement officials arrested two suspected illegal waste dumpers in the same area.
The suspects, identified as a load carrier and a suspected cart pusher, were reportedly arrested for dumping waste on the road median and engaging in unauthorised waste collection.
Gbadegesin warned that LAWMA would continue to monitor waste hotspots and take action against individuals and organisations found violating environmental regulations.
He urged residents, businesses and waste collectors to use approved disposal channels and patronise only assigned Private Sector Participants.
