Ikoyi Club 1938 has officially commenced its week-long 88th anniversary celebration with a Media Connect event in Lagos, unveiling a commemorative logo under the theme, “Legacy in Motion.”
The event, held at the club’s Rotunda on Monday, attracted prominent personalities from Nigeria’s entertainment and media industries, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Sola Sobowale, Kunle Afolayan, Kate Henshaw, Elizabeth Benson and Muyiwa Ademola.
Club officials in attendance included Chairman Akinwunmi Akintola, Vice Chairman and Anniversary Committee Chairman Bolaji Martins, Golf Captain Afolabi Balogun and General Manager/Chief Executive Officer Dr Babajide Orungbeja.
Akintola, who has been a member of the club for more than 60 years, said the anniversary was not only an opportunity to celebrate the club’s history but also to look ahead.
“For 88 years, generations of members have built, nurtured and preserved this club. They have given us traditions, friendship, values and an institution of which we can all be proud,” he said.
He described the anniversary logo as a reflection of the club’s heritage and its continuing journey, while also praising Nigeria’s media and creative industries for helping project the country internationally.
The chairman said the anniversary programme would celebrate the club’s diversity and fellowship, while reaffirming its commitment to preserving its traditions and embracing new ideas and technology.
“As we move forward, we will continue to preserve the traditions that define the club while embracing new ideas, technologies and initiatives that will keep it vibrant and relevant for future generations,” Akintola said.
Martins expressed appreciation to the entertainment personalities who attended the celebration, describing their contributions to Nigeria’s creative industry as significant.
The anniversary programme, which runs from September 28 to October 4, features a wide range of activities. Monday included a colloquium titled “The Ikoyi Club Story,” delivered by Uncle Bamtefa.
Tuesday will feature staff engagement, Banking and Finance Day, an art exhibition and auction, while Wednesday will host an Elders’ Party and Digital Night.
Thursday includes a book reading, children’s and junior members’ parties and a table tennis-themed Ladies’ Night. Friday will feature a Real Estate Expo and Millennial Vibes night.
Saturday will include a health walk, Global Cultural Day, Foods of the World and Diversity Night, celebrating Caribbean, Indian and European cultures.
The celebrations will conclude on Sunday, October 4, with the Anniversary Gala on the Main Lawn. Veteran musician Ebenezer Obey is also scheduled to perform during the celebrations.
The club also honoured some of the entertainers present with awards recognising their contributions to Nigeria’s media and entertainment industry.
