Former Super Eagles forward Osaze Odemwingie has revealed how a major logistical error left Nigeria’s U-23 team wearing kits originally intended for the women’s team during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Odemwingie shared the unusual story while speaking with Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, recalling how Samson Siasia’s team unexpectedly progressed deep into the tournament after officials had apparently anticipated an early exit.
According to the former West Bromwich Albion forward, Nigeria’s delegation had seemingly arranged for the team’s main supply of kits to be sent back home before the competition had properly begun.
However, the players defied those expectations by progressing beyond the group stage, leaving them short of the required matchday apparel for the knockout rounds.
“At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie recalled.
He explained that officials apparently believed the team would not advance far enough to need the additional kits.
“Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits,” he said.
The unusual situation quickly became noticeable to other teams, with Odemwingie revealing that members of the United States squad teased the Nigerians for repeatedly wearing the same outfits.
“Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us,” he said.
With limited alternatives available, some Nigerian players resorted to buying plain white T-shirts to vary their appearance.
Despite the bizarre kit shortage, the team continued to perform impressively on the pitch. Nigeria progressed all the way to the Olympic final, where they faced Argentina.
The Super Eagles eventually settled for the silver medal after losing 1-0, with Ángel Di María scoring the decisive goal.
Nigeria’s run remains one of the country’s notable Olympic football campaigns, but Odemwingie’s recollection has added a humorous behind-the-scenes story to the Beijing experience.
The episode also highlighted how the players managed to overcome an unexpected logistical challenge while competing at the highest level of international youth football.
