Two Armed Suspects Arrested at Cross River Mining Site

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has arrested two suspected armed individuals at a mining site in Cross River State.

The suspects were apprehended during a security operation conducted by officers of the NSCDC as part of efforts to improve security and prevent criminal activities at mining locations across the state.

According to the corps, the two suspects were found with weapons at the mining site. Their arrest followed intelligence gathering and security surveillance around the area.

The NSCDC said the operation was carried out to ensure that mining activities are conducted in a safe and orderly environment and to prevent criminal elements from using mining sites as hideouts or bases for illegal activities.

The arrested suspects were taken into custody for questioning. The corps said investigations are ongoing to establish their identities, the purpose of the weapons found in their possession and whether they have connections with other criminal activities in the area.

The command also stated that the investigation would help determine whether the suspects were involved in illegal mining, theft, intimidation of workers or other offences associated with mining communities.

The NSCDC has continued to intensify operations around mining sites in different parts of the country because of concerns over illegal mining and the security challenges associated with the sector.

Mining sites can sometimes attract criminal elements who exploit remote locations and limited security presence to carry out illegal activities. Security agencies have therefore increased surveillance and enforcement efforts in areas where mining operations are taking place.

The arrest in Cross River is expected to further strengthen the security presence around mining communities and reassure legitimate miners and residents in the affected areas.

The NSCDC urged mining operators and residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information about suspicious movements and individuals.

The corps also warned people involved in illegal activities to desist, stressing that anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted.

The two suspects are expected to remain in custody while the investigation continues. Further details about the weapons recovered and possible charges against them are expected to emerge after the completion of the investigation.

The NSCDC said it would continue to work with other security agencies to protect lives and property and maintain peace across Cross River State.
