Nigeria recorded 500 security incidents across the country in August 2026, with the northern region accounting for 334, representing 67 per cent of the total.
The figures were contained in the latest Nigeria Security Index by Eons Intelligence, which highlighted the continued security challenges facing several parts of the country.
Zamfara recorded the highest number of incidents with 45, followed by Niger with 41, Kano with 38 and Sokoto with 37. Kaduna and Katsina recorded 29 incidents each, while Kebbi recorded 29 and Borno recorded 28.
Plateau recorded 24 incidents, while Delta and Rivers recorded 22 each.
The report comes amid growing concerns over kidnapping, banditry and terrorist attacks across parts of northern Nigeria. Criminal groups have continued to exploit forests and difficult terrain to carry out attacks and abduct residents for ransom.
In August, security forces rescued 308 kidnapped victims in separate operations in Niger and Kwara states. However, the situation remained serious after hundreds of worshippers were reportedly abducted in Niger State, with at least 30 people killed.
A separate analysis by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project, ACLED, also showed significant changes in the pattern of violent insecurity across Nigeria between 2021 and 2026.
The reports have renewed calls for the Federal Government to strengthen security operations and move beyond a largely reactive approach.
Experts have also identified poor governance, weak coordination among security agencies, unemployment and other socio-economic challenges as factors contributing to the persistence of insecurity.
The figures show that while insecurity remains a national challenge, the North continues to bear the greatest burden, with two out of every three security incidents recorded in August occurring in the region.
