The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reappointed Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, handing the experienced coach another opportunity to lead the national team on the international stage.
The 73-year-old returns to the Ghana dugout after previously taking charge of the Black Stars during this year’s FIFA World Cup, where he guided the team to the last 32 before they were eliminated by Colombia following a 1-0 defeat.
Queiroz appeared to announce his departure from the Ghana job on social media shortly after the World Cup loss. However, following subsequent discussions with the GFA, both parties have agreed to continue their relationship.
The football association did not disclose the duration of Queiroz’s new contract but said the Portuguese would be responsible for steering the Black Stars into what it described as “a successful new phase on the international stage.”
In announcing his return, the GFA highlighted Queiroz’s wealth of international experience and his familiarity with the Ghanaian national team.
“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter,” the association said in a statement on Thursday.
Queiroz brings considerable experience from international football, having previously coached Portugal, Iran, Egypt, South Africa, Colombia and Qatar at different stages of his career.
He has also worked at one of the biggest clubs in world football, serving two spells as assistant manager at Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
His immediate challenge will be to prepare Ghana for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars expected to begin their qualification journey later this month.
Ghana have been placed in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. The dates and venues for the opening two fixtures are yet to be confirmed.
The GFA said further details regarding Queiroz’s mandate and responsibilities would be announced in due course.
His reappointment comes as Ghana seek stability and a strong foundation for the next phase of their international campaign, with expectations high for the experienced Portuguese coach to guide the Black Stars back among Africa’s leading football nations.
