Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed a new senior military commander in the biggest shake up of the country’s armed forces since Russia’s full scale invasion began, as anti government protests over a controversial anti-corruption law intensified across Ukraine.

Zelensky announced the appointment following consultations with military leaders, saying the changes were aimed at strengthening battlefield command and improving the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defence against Russian forces. The leadership overhaul comes at a time when Kyiv faces mounting pressure along the front lines and growing domestic political tensions.

The military reshuffle coincided with nationwide protests sparked by legislation that critics say weakens the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions. Demonstrators gathered in Kyiv and several other cities, urging the government to reverse the reforms and preserve oversight bodies regarded as essential for democratic governance and continued Western support.

Zelensky said defending Ukraine against Russia remained the government’s highest priority while acknowledging public concerns over governance and accountability. He pledged that the military changes would strengthen the country’s defence capabilities without affecting its commitment to democratic reforms and cooperation with international partners.

Analysts said the appointment reflects Kyiv’s effort to adapt its military strategy as the war enters another critical phase, while also responding to domestic pressure over government decisions unrelated to the battlefield. The protests are among the largest public demonstrations in Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine’s Western allies have repeatedly stressed that maintaining independent anti corruption institutions is vital for continued financial and military assistance, as well as the country’s ambition to join the European Union. Government officials insist the reforms are intended to improve coordination among law enforcement agencies rather than weaken oversight.
