Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement with Arsenal to sign England Under 21 midfielder Ethan Nwaneri on a season long loan.

The 19 year old Arsenal academy graduate will move to the Bundesliga side after the two clubs finalised terms ahead of the transfer deadline. The agreement does not include an option for Dortmund to make the transfer permanent.

Dortmund will reportedly cover Nwaneri’s full salary during the loan spell and pay a loan fee as part of the agreement. The move is designed to give the highly rated youngster regular first team football and valuable experience in Germany.

Nwaneri has struggled to secure consistent playing opportunities at Arsenal this season because of strong competition for places in Mikel Arteta’s attacking midfield options. His absence from recent matchday squads increased speculation that the club was prepared to allow him to leave temporarily.

The decision to send him on loan is also viewed as part of Arsenal’s plan to continue his development without permanently losing one of the most promising players produced by their academy.

Nwaneri became the youngest player to appear in a Premier League match when he made his Arsenal debut at just 15 years and 181 days in 2022. Since then, he has progressed into the first team and made 51 senior appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals.

The midfielder spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Marseille, where he made 11 appearances, scoring twice and providing an assist.

Dortmund’s interest in Nwaneri increased after the club suffered a major injury blow to new signing Giannis Konstantelias. The German club identified the Arsenal youngster as one of the options capable of providing additional attacking quality.

Nwaneri is regarded as a technically gifted player who can operate as an attacking midfielder or from wide positions. His ability to carry the ball, create chances and contribute goals has made him one of the most closely watched young English players in European football.

The move to Dortmund will provide Nwaneri with the opportunity to compete in the Bundesliga and potentially play Champions League football, giving him valuable experience at the highest level.

For Arsenal, the loan represents an opportunity for the teenager to gain regular playing time while remaining part of the club’s long term plans.

Dortmund will hope Nwaneri can quickly adapt to German football and provide additional attacking options during a demanding campaign.

The transfer is expected to be formally completed after the necessary registration and medical procedures.
