Football’s transfer market has entered an era of unprecedented spending, but Neymar’s historic £200 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains the benchmark that no club has been able to surpass.

The Brazilian superstar’s transfer continues to stand as the most expensive deal in football history, nearly a decade after PSG triggered his release clause and stunned the football world with a fee that shattered previous records.

Neymar’s move to Paris fundamentally changed the economics of the modern transfer market. At the time, the £200 million price tag appeared almost unimaginable, but the years that followed have seen clubs regularly commit nine-figure sums to secure elite talent.

PSG remain heavily represented near the top of the list, with Kylian Mbappé’s move from Monaco to the French giants in 2017 ranking second at approximately £166 million.

Philippe Coutinho’s transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018 occupies third place, with the deal eventually reaching around £142 million when add-ons were taken into account.

Ousmane Dembélé, another player who moved to Barcelona in 2017, is fourth on the list at approximately £136 million.

The latest wave of big-money transfers has continued to push the boundaries.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández moved to Manchester City in 2026 for a reported £125 million, matching the fee Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak in 2025.

Morgan Rogers’ reported £117 million transfer in 2026 also places the England international among the most expensive players in football history, while Elliot Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest was valued at around £116 million.

Jude Bellingham’s 2023 transfer to Real Madrid is also listed among the biggest deals, with the England midfielder’s move reported at around £125 million when additional payments are included.

João Félix completes the top 10 following his 2019 transfer from Benfica to Atlético Madrid, which cost approximately £113 million.

The figures underline just how dramatically the football transfer market has changed.

Not long ago, a £100 million transfer was considered extraordinary. Today, clubs are increasingly prepared to commit sums well above that figure for players viewed as capable of delivering immediate success or becoming future superstars.

Despite the rapid escalation in transfer fees, however, Neymar’s £200 million record remains intact.

Top 10 Most Expensive Football Transfers

  1. Neymar — Barcelona to PSG, 2017 — £200m

For now, though, the £200 million barrier remains firmly under the Brazilian superstar’s name.
