Four people have been charged with murder following the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield, in a case that has prompted a major police investigation.

The baby was found at a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area of the city after police were called on Sunday, August 30, following concerns about the safety of an infant.

Emergency services attended the property, but despite efforts by police officers and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

A forensic postmortem examination later established that the infant died from stab wounds.

Two men and two women have now been charged with murder. They are Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath, 19, Peter Horvath, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37.

The four adults have also been charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by allegedly taking steps to conceal the killing of the infant.

A 15 year old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice. She cannot be named because of her age.

All five defendants have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The charges follow an investigation that began after officers were called to the property over concerns for the newborn’s welfare.

Police initially arrested seven people aged between 15 and 38 in connection with the investigation. Two women, aged 26 and 37, have since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

Detectives have continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death, with specialist officers involved in searches and other investigative work in the Wincobank area.

The case has also prompted police to appeal for restraint from members of the public, particularly over speculation or the sharing of information online.

Investigators have stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the criminal justice process as the case moves before the courts.

The Crown Prosecution Service has also reminded the public that the charges are allegations and that the defendants have the right to a fair trial.

The decision to prosecute the four adults followed an assessment that there was sufficient evidence for criminal proceedings to be brought before a court.

The tragic death has deeply affected the local community, with police acknowledging the impact of the incident on residents and those involved in the emergency response.

Investigators are expected to continue gathering evidence as the legal proceedings begin.

The court appearances will mark the first formal stage of the case, while detectives continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death.
