The Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate for Oyo Central, Ayobami Olunloyo, has said his late father’s political career inspired his ambition to serve the people and contribute to the development of his constituency.

Olunloyo, son of former Oyo State governor, Dr Omololu Olunloyo, said his early exposure to politics helped him understand how political leadership could improve people’s lives.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the state capital, the candidate explained that his involvement in politics over the years had largely been behind the scenes, adding that his current ambition presented an opportunity to put his experience and preparation into practice.

He also disclosed that he attended the School of Politics, Policy and Governance to strengthen his understanding of public leadership, policy development and governance.

According to him, his family background may have influenced his interest in politics, but he recognises that he must take personal responsibility for addressing the needs of the people he hopes to represent.

Olunloyo identified security, healthcare and education as major priorities for Oyo Central Senatorial District.

He said his development framework was built around six pillars, namely work, education, food, healthcare, security and heritage, stressing that representation should produce practical benefits for citizens rather than legislation without a direct impact on their lives.

On healthcare, Olunloyo expressed concern about access to medical services and called for improvements in primary healthcare facilities across the district.

He claimed that someone died every 30 minutes in Oyo Central due to social challenges, including inadequate healthcare and accidents, although he did not provide a source for the figure.

He argued that accessible healthcare centres would reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to obtain medical attention.

On education, the candidate said expanding access should involve improving existing schools and increasing their capacity to accommodate more pupils, rather than concentrating only on constructing new facilities.

He also identified intelligence gathering, effective law enforcement and community-based security measures as important components of efforts to address insecurity.

Regarding flooding and drainage, Olunloyo said interventions must reflect the specific challenges facing the district’s 11 local government areas. He mentioned Akinyele and Oluyole as areas where flood and flash-flood warnings had been issued.

The candidate also promised transparency and accountability if elected, saying constituents should be able to assess completed and proposed projects within six months of his election.

He maintained that constituency projects should address practical needs such as healthcare, education, water supply and other basic amenities.

On the forthcoming election, Olunloyo said his campaign would focus on engaging voters and presenting his plans for the district, adding that the electorate would ultimately decide who represents them.

He also defended his decision to contest on the PDP platform, describing the party as one with a history of governance and saying he believed it could contribute to Nigeria’s development.
