Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has called on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to make his academic records public. Obi said the move would help dispel misinformation and silence critics questioning his educational background.
Speaking at a public forum, Obi emphasized that transparency is essential in leadership and that Nigerians deserve to know the truth about their leaders’ qualifications. He noted that his time at UNN shaped his worldview and prepared him for public service, insisting that he has nothing to hide.
“I am proud of my academic journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I urge the institution to release my records so that the public can see the truth for themselves. Leadership must be built on trust, and trust comes from transparency,” Obi stated.
The call comes amid growing debates on the academic credentials of Nigerian politicians, with opposition figures often using such issues to challenge credibility. Obi’s appeal to UNN is seen as a proactive step to counter false narratives and reinforce his reputation as a candidate who values accountability.
Political analysts say the request could set a precedent, encouraging other institutions to make records of public office holders available when controversies arise. They argue that such openness would strengthen democratic processes and reduce the spread of disinformation.
Supporters of Obi welcomed the move, describing it as consistent with his image as a reform-minded politician. They believe that releasing the records will further validate his integrity and commitment to good governance. Critics, however, argue that the call is politically calculated, aimed at boosting his standing ahead of the 2027 elections.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has yet to issue an official response to Obi’s request. Observers note that if the institution complies, it could spark wider demands for similar disclosures from other universities linked to prominent politicians.
As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, the issue of academic transparency is expected to remain a recurring theme in political discourse. Obi’s insistence on openness may resonate with voters who are increasingly demanding accountability from their leaders.
