Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly rejected several offers from Manchester City for Super Falcons midfielder Jennifer Echegini, with the French club determined to keep the Nigerian international despite growing interest from England.
According to BBC Sport, PSG regard the 25-year-old midfielder as an important member of their squad and are unwilling to sanction her departure, even though she has only one year remaining on her current contract.
Manchester City are keen to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Women’s Super League season and have identified Echegini as a potential addition before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Echegini has established herself as an important figure for both club and country since moving to PSG two years ago. The midfielder spent most of her youth career in England before joining Italian giants Juventus, where she spent a season prior to her switch to France.
Her performances for Nigeria have further raised her profile.
Echegini played a key role in the Super Falcons’ successful Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign last year, scoring the decisive goal in the final against Morocco as Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th continental title.
Manchester City’s interest has reportedly intensified following the news that experienced forward and midfielder Vivianne Miedema will miss the beginning of the new season with a knee injury.
However, PSG are reluctant to lose another important player and appear prepared to resist City’s attempts to prise Echegini away from Paris.
The French side are also focused on their immediate European commitments, with PSG preparing for their Women’s Champions League third-round qualifying clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
While Echegini’s future remains a subject of transfer speculation, another PSG player is expected to leave before the deadline.
France international defender Elisa de Almeida is reportedly set to join Arsenal after the two clubs reached an agreement over a deal worth around £550,000.
De Almeida is expected to feature for PSG against Eintracht Frankfurt before travelling to London to complete her move to Arsenal.
For Echegini, however, PSG’s firm stance means Manchester City may have to make a significantly stronger effort if they are to persuade the French club to release the Super Falcons star before the transfer window closes.
