Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to increase Nigeria’s security workforce and provide modern equipment to tackle kidnapping and armed attacks if elected president in 2027.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate made the commitment while responding to questions from Nigerians about how he would address insecurity across the country, particularly in the North-West and North-East.
Atiku said recruiting additional security personnel and equipping them with modern tools would strengthen efforts to combat armed groups and protect communities affected by violence.
His response was shared through Askatiku.ng, an online platform created to allow Nigerians to question him directly about his policies, priorities and plans for a possible administration.
The platform has reportedly attracted more than 1,000 questions, with a video of Atiku answering some of them circulating online.
However, his response did not include specific recruitment targets, details of the proposed equipment or a clear timeline for implementing the measures.
Atiku Recalls Motivation Behind ABTI University
Beyond security, Atiku also discussed his investment in education, explaining the experiences that inspired him to establish ABTI University in Yola, Adamawa State.
He said his interest in education was shaped by his childhood, particularly the shortage of teachers in the years following Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
Atiku recalled that foreign teachers played an important role in his education and influenced his appreciation for learning.
After completing his university education, working in the public service and building his business, he said he began looking for ways to contribute to his community.
That reflection eventually led to the idea of establishing ABTI University.
He also recalled travelling to the United States to explore a possible partnership with American University, including the prospect of bringing some of its teachers to support the institution.
The responses highlight two areas Atiku has discussed through his online engagement with Nigerians: addressing insecurity and expanding access to education.
As the 2027 election approaches, his proposed security measures and other policy commitments are likely to face closer scrutiny over their funding, implementation and expected results.
