Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated top seed Alexander Zverev to book his place in the Shanghai Masters final, where he will face fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar in an all-Spanish showdown.
The 25th-seeded Davidovich Fokina recovered from losing the opening set to beat Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday’s semifinal. He produced 36 winners and took control in the deciding set after securing an early break.
The victory marks Davidovich Fokina’s second ATP Masters 1000 final appearance. The 27-year-old has also extended his winning streak in China to nine matches following his title triumph in Chengdu last month.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Jodar secured his place in the final with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over former world number one Daniil Medvedev.
Jodar’s impressive run marks his first appearance in a Masters 1000 final and makes him the youngest finalist in Shanghai Masters history.
Sunday’s final will be the first meeting between the two Spaniards, guaranteeing a Spanish champion at the tournament.
Both players will now compete for one of the biggest titles of their careers as Spanish tennis takes centre stage in Shanghai.
