Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday, giving Mikel Arteta a winning celebration in his 250th Premier League match in charge.
The result maintained Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, with the Gunners claiming maximum points from their opening two matches. Villa, meanwhile, remain without a point after suffering back-to-back defeats.
Aston Villa started brightly at Villa Park despite losing several key players in recent weeks and came close to taking the lead after just 12 minutes. Emiliano Buendia’s long-range effort beat Arsenal goalkeeper but struck the crossbar.
Arsenal struggled to create clear openings during the first half, with Declan Rice coming closest when his header from a corner was tipped over the bar by Villa debutant goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The Gunners gradually established greater control of possession but failed to register a shot on target before the interval, while Villa striker Nicolas Jackson found himself largely isolated in attack.
Arteta responded at half-time by introducing Eberechi Eze for Christos Tzolis as Arsenal looked to add more creativity and attacking threat.
Villa created the first notable chance after the restart when Ian Maatsen fired over from a difficult angle.
Maatsen was later involved in a controversial moment when referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded Arsenal a penalty after the defender appeared to bring down Saka inside the area.
However, a VAR review determined that the contact had occurred outside the box, with Arsenal instead awarded a free-kick. Martin Odegaard took the resulting set-piece but sent his effort narrowly wide.
Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough in the 59th minute.
Riccardo Calafiori burst beyond the Villa defence before delivering a low cross into the penalty area. Saka reacted quickest, bundling the ball over the line to put Arsenal ahead.
The goal was Saka’s second in as many Premier League matches this season, underlining his importance to Arteta’s attacking plans.
Villa were forced to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser, leaving spaces for Arsenal to exploit on the counter.
Suzuki, who became the first Japanese goalkeeper to feature in the Premier League, produced an outstanding one-on-one save to deny Kai Havertz and keep Villa within touching distance.
Arsenal also handed Bruno Guimaraes his Premier League debut after he came off the bench, while Ezri Konsa made his first appearance for the Gunners against his former club after replacing Cristhian Mosquera.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Arsenal held on to secure another important away victory.
The result extended Arsenal’s remarkable record of winning their opening away league match in each of the last five seasons and gave Arteta the perfect way to mark his 250th Premier League game as manager.
For Villa, the defeat leaves Unai Emery’s side with plenty to address after a difficult opening fortnight. The club have now lost their first two league matches and are yet to register a shot on target in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal will now look to build on their perfect start as they continue their pursuit of an early position among the league’s leading contenders, while Villa face the task of turning their fortunes around quickly.
