A former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, has urged northerners to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election, citing infrastructure development and ongoing government reforms.
Shagari, a former Minister of Water Resources and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, made the appeal while congratulating Tinubu and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the party’s presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Musa Ubandawaki, Shagari described the event as a demonstration of the party’s organisational strength and its efforts to mobilise support ahead of the election.
He also commended the commissioning of the Kaduna-Abuja dual carriageway, noting that improved road infrastructure could facilitate trade, ease transportation and support economic activities.
Shagari urged the Federal Government to sustain infrastructure investment while prioritising security, economic stability, job creation and social protection. He stressed that government support should be matched by transparency, accountability and policies that improve citizens’ living conditions.
Shagari’s appeal highlights the importance of northern political support in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election. His remarks also underscore the role of infrastructure development and economic reforms in political debates, while placing public expectations for improved living standards at the centre of discussions about governance.
The appeal represents Shagari’s political position and does not establish how northern voters will ultimately vote in 2027.
