Residents of Chanchanji community in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State reportedly fled their homes after suspected armed herdsmen invaded the area and opened fire, triggering panic among residents.
The incident was reported on October 17, 2026, after residents said gunshots were heard in different parts of the community. Women and children were among those who reportedly escaped into nearby bushes to seek safety.
At the time of the initial report, the number of casualties and the extent of damage to property had not been established. Residents also expressed concern about the reported absence of security personnel during the attack.
Chanchanji and neighbouring communities have experienced repeated security challenges, resulting in displacement and disruption to farming and other daily activities. In July 2024, the community’s traditional ruler, HRH Tanimu Kunbiya, and his son were killed along the Takum–Chanchanji road.
Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, operating under Operation Whirl Stroke, have reportedly foiled planned attacks in the area in recent months.
