The death toll from the deadly attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State has continued to rise, with reports from different sources giving varying casualty figures.
The attack occurred on Friday, October 23, when armed men reportedly invaded the community, opened fire on residents and looted shops. Houses, motorcycles and other property were also reportedly set ablaze.
The Taraba State Police Command initially confirmed that 10 people had been killed. The command’s spokesperson, ASP Victor Mshelizah, was identified in reports concerning the initial casualty figure.
However, Amnesty International Nigeria later reported that at least 40 people died, as additional bodies were discovered during searches around the community. Subsequent reports indicated that the number could be higher, although the differing figures have yet to be fully reconciled.
The attack forced residents to flee their homes, while some victims were reportedly found in nearby bushes and other locations as searches continued.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of rural communities in Taraba State and neighbouring areas. It also highlights the need for effective security intervention, transparent investigations and support for affected families.
Amnesty International has called for an impartial investigation, stronger protection for vulnerable communities and justice for the victims.
