Tension has risen in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the killing of three local vigilantes by gunmen.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 25, when the assailants reportedly stormed the community and opened fire on the vigilantes who were on duty protecting residents. The incident triggered protests as residents took to the streets to express anger over the worsening security situation.
The latest killings come amid heightened insecurity across parts of Plateau State, particularly Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Bokkos local government areas, where the state government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Residents have continued to call for stronger security measures, arguing that community volunteers are increasingly exposed to attacks while attempting to protect vulnerable communities.
The Plateau State Government has condemned the latest attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. It said security agencies were taking steps to apprehend those responsible and prevent further violence.
The incident adds to a series of recent attacks in the state that have left security personnel, vigilantes and civilians dead, deepening concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures.
