The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has provided clean cookstoves and other technology based solutions to residents of Lagos State as part of efforts to promote cleaner energy use and improve household welfare.
The initiative is designed to expand access to affordable and environmentally friendly cooking technologies while reducing dependence on traditional cooking methods that expose households to harmful smoke and contribute to environmental degradation.
The distribution of clean cookstoves forms part of broader efforts to encourage the adoption of improved energy technologies among communities and support Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
For many households, particularly those with limited access to reliable electricity or modern cooking fuels, traditional biomass remains an important source of cooking energy. However, the use of firewood and other solid fuels can increase household exposure to smoke and place additional pressure on forests.
The introduction of clean cookstoves offers an opportunity to improve cooking efficiency while reducing the amount of fuel required by households. This can lower cooking expenses over time and reduce the environmental impact associated with excessive use of firewood and charcoal.
Beyond the immediate benefits to households, the initiative is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s wider clean energy and climate objectives by encouraging the adoption of technologies that generate fewer emissions.
The intervention also highlights the growing importance of locally developed technologies in addressing everyday challenges faced by Nigerian communities. By supporting the deployment of indigenous solutions, the initiative can contribute to technological development, local manufacturing and job creation.
Women and children, who are often more exposed to household cooking smoke, stand to benefit significantly from cleaner cooking technologies. Reduced exposure to smoke can improve the quality of indoor environments while making cooking more convenient and efficient.
The initiative comes amid increasing efforts to address Nigeria’s energy access challenges and expand the use of alternative energy technologies. Clean cooking remains an important component of this transition because access to electricity alone does not automatically guarantee access to clean household cooking.
The distribution of clean cookstoves could also help demonstrate the practical benefits of cleaner technologies to communities and encourage wider adoption beyond the initial beneficiaries.
For Lagos residents, the intervention provides access to improved cooking equipment while reinforcing the importance of energy efficiency and environmentally responsible consumption.
NASENI’s involvement further reflects the role of science, technology and engineering institutions in developing practical solutions to socioeconomic challenges. Continued investment in locally designed technologies could help Nigeria reduce dependence on imported equipment while strengthening domestic industrial capacity.
The success of clean cooking initiatives, however, will depend on sustained access to affordable equipment, user education, maintenance support and reliable supply chains. Ensuring that beneficiaries understand how to use and maintain the cookstoves will also be important for achieving lasting benefits.
As Nigeria continues to pursue cleaner energy alternatives, initiatives that combine technology development with direct community intervention could help accelerate the adoption of sustainable solutions.
The provision of clean cookstoves and related technologies to Lagos residents therefore represents another step towards improving household energy efficiency, protecting the environment and expanding access to cleaner cooking options.
