The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of nine bodies along the Wawa-Lumma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The victims were suspected to have been killed by bandits while travelling along the route. The discovery was reported to security authorities on Tuesday, prompting the immediate deployment of police and military tactical teams to the area.
The security personnel recovered and evacuated the bodies from the scene, while clearance operations were intensified along the road and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks and address possible security threats.
The police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the operation was carried out by joint police and military teams following information received about the incident.
The incident comes amid continuing security challenges in parts of Niger State, particularly communities and routes affected by banditry and kidnapping.
The development also follows recent security operations in Niger and neighbouring Kwara states, where security agencies rescued hundreds of people abducted in separate attacks. In one of the operations, 145 kidnapped victims were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in New Bussa, Niger State.
The latest incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of travellers using the Wawa-Lumma axis. Security agencies have continued operations in the area as efforts are made to secure the route and prevent further attacks.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the nine victims or provided further details on when the suspected attack occurred.
