Hundreds of Nigerians took to the streets in Lagos and Abuja on Thursday to protest the rising cost of living, worsening insecurity and the economic challenges confronting millions of households across the country.
The demonstrators, drawn from various civil society organisations, youth groups and concerned citizens, marched through major roads carrying placards with inscriptions calling on the Federal Government to take urgent action to address inflation, unemployment and the deteriorating security situation.
In Lagos, protesters gathered at strategic locations before moving peacefully through designated routes under the watch of security operatives. They expressed frustration over the increasing prices of food, transportation and other essential commodities, saying many families are finding it difficult to meet their daily needs.
A similar demonstration was held in Abuja, where participants called for stronger measures to curb violent crimes, terrorism, kidnapping and attacks affecting communities in different parts of the country. They urged the government to strengthen security operations while implementing policies that would ease the economic burden on ordinary Nigerians.
Many of the protesters argued that despite various economic reforms introduced by the government, the benefits have yet to translate into improved living conditions for the average citizen. They called for greater investment in job creation, agriculture, social welfare programmes and support for small businesses to stimulate economic recovery.
Security agencies monitored the protests to ensure law and order, while organisers appealed to participants to remain peaceful and avoid any actions capable of disrupting public peace. There were no immediate reports of major violence or destruction of property during the demonstrations.
The protests come amid continued public concern over inflation, the high cost of essential goods and persistent security challenges in several parts of the country. Economic analysts have noted that while ongoing reforms are aimed at stabilising the economy over the long term, many Nigerians continue to face significant short-term financial pressures.
Citizens have continued to urge government at all levels to prioritise security, create employment opportunities and implement policies that improve living standards and restore public confidence in the nation’s economic future.
