A delegation from the Kano State Government has met with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, to press for the release of the ₦5 billion market relief fund approved to support traders and businesses affected by market disasters in the state.

The delegation appealed for the prompt disbursement of the intervention fund, describing it as critical to the recovery of thousands of traders who suffered significant losses following fire outbreaks and other incidents that disrupted commercial activities in major markets across Kano.

Speaking during the meeting, members of the delegation emphasised that the release of the fund would help restore livelihoods, revive small businesses and stimulate economic activities within one of Nigeria’s largest commercial hubs. They noted that many affected traders are still struggling to recover from the financial impact of the disasters.

The officials also highlighted the importance of the intervention in supporting the state’s informal sector, which contributes significantly to employment and economic growth. They argued that timely financial assistance would enable beneficiaries to restock their businesses, preserve jobs and reduce the economic hardship facing affected communities.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation assured the delegation that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting states through targeted intervention programmes aimed at promoting economic recovery and improving the welfare of citizens. He acknowledged the importance of Kano’s commercial sector to Nigeria’s economy and pledged to facilitate the necessary processes regarding the request.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by both the Federal and Kano State governments to strengthen economic resilience and provide relief for businesses impacted by unforeseen disasters. Stakeholders have continued to advocate for quicker disbursement of approved intervention funds to ensure that affected entrepreneurs can resume operations without prolonged financial setbacks.

Economic analysts say the release of the ₦5 billion relief package would provide much needed support to small and medium sized enterprises in Kano, boost commercial activities and contribute to broader economic recovery in the state.

If approved for immediate disbursement, the intervention is expected to enhance business confidence and reinforce government efforts to protect livelihoods while promoting sustainable economic growth.
