The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has condemned the recent killings and abductions in Borgu, Niger State, and Ukum, Benue State, urging the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect citizens.
The bishops expressed concern over the reported abduction of more than 60 Muslim worshippers from a mosque in Borgu and the killing of 47 people in Ukum, where 17 others were reportedly critically injured.
In a statement signed by the CBCN President, Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, the Catholic leaders described the worsening security situation as an “intolerable” level of bloodshed and violence.
The bishops expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, particularly the abducted worshippers, and called for their immediate and safe release.
They urged the Federal Government, state governments and security agencies to adopt more proactive and intelligence-led strategies to prevent attacks, identify perpetrators and bring them and their sponsors to justice.
The CBCN stressed that attacks on Nigerians, whether in mosques, churches, marketplaces or their homes, must attract an urgent and decisive response from the authorities.
The bishops also appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope, while calling on security agencies to remain committed to restoring peace and ensuring the safety and welfare of citizens.
