The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has approved a nationwide compliance audit of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to assess the implementation of the enhanced entry point policy for engineers in the Public Service.
The decision was taken at COREN’s 190th Ordinary Council Meeting in Abuja, where the council also approved renewed engagement with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation on the implementation of the policy.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), COREN Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Okorie Uche, disclosed the resolutions on Thursday, stressing that the council remained committed to strengthening engineering regulation in line with its statutory mandate.
Uche said the council had approved stronger compliance and enforcement measures aimed at improving professional standards, technical competence and public safety.
He disclosed that COREN approved the registration of 2,001 engineering practitioners, comprising 1,410 engineers, 227 engineering technologists, 15 engineering technicians, 334 engineering craftsmen and 15 expatriate practitioners.
The council also approved the registration of 33 engineering firms operating across different areas of engineering practice.
Uche said COREN had further approved the full accreditation of selected firms under the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certification Scheme, being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme.
He explained that the initiative was designed to strengthen professional capacity and promote higher standards in renewable energy and energy efficiency practices.
The registrar also disclosed that the council considered certification examination results from seven training centres involving 478 candidates, with 177 candidates successfully passing the examinations.
Following the assessment, the council directed the adoption of the COREN and NESP approved Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training Curriculum at Enerplaz Paygo Solutions in Port Harcourt.
Uche said COREN was also taking measures to address recurring engineering failures and building collapses by strengthening its regulatory intervention and enforcement mechanisms.
According to him, the measures would enable the council to respond more effectively to violations of engineering standards that could put lives and property at risk.
The council also approved a structured competency development program for Engineering Regulation Inspection Officers, alongside a comprehensive regulatory strategy involving a nationwide public awareness campaign and an integrated digital compliance and verification platform.
Other measures include mandatory COREN compliance for engineering procurement and approvals, stronger Engineering Compliance Inspectorate Units, increased collaboration with relevant government agencies and stricter enforcement of annual practising licence requirements.
Uche said COREN had also approved the establishment of a National Engineering Practice Database to strengthen the monitoring, verification and regulation of engineering activities across the country.
To improve technical skills and regulatory processes, the council approved the automation of registration for engineering artisans and Skills Training Centres through the COREN Portal.
The registrar said the council would also strengthen the recognition and regulation of engineering craftsmen, while collaborating with the National Board for Technical Education to develop National Occupational Standards for various technical occupations.
The occupations include bicycle mechanics, GSM phone repairs, satellite installation, tractor operation and maintenance, motor body building and transmission repairs.
In engineering education, COREN approved the implementation of the National Engineering Admission Quota and Carrying Capacity Enforcement Framework, aimed at improving quality assurance and ensuring that engineering programs in Nigerian universities operate within approved standards and capacities.
The council also approved revised Terms of Reference for its Codes and Standards Committee to strengthen the development, review, promotion and monitoring of engineering codes and standards.
It further approved the adoption of the Engineering Sliding Scale of Fees in Nigeria, known as ESSOFIN.
Uche said regional stakeholders’ engagement workshops would also be organised before the end of 2026 to promote consultation, consensus building and nationwide ownership of the council’s regulatory initiatives.
He assured engineering practitioners, government institutions, industry stakeholders and members of the public that COREN would continue to implement the resolutions in line with its statutory mandate.
