Former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he would consider leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu’s administration shows disrespect toward the Catholic Church.

Kalu, a prominent APC chieftain and Catholic faithful, made the statement while reacting to discussions surrounding the relationship between government institutions and religious organisations. He stressed the importance of respecting the role of religious bodies in promoting peace, morality and social development.

The former Senate Chief Whip said the Catholic Church has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s development through its involvement in education, healthcare, humanitarian services and community development. He warned that any action perceived as undermining the institution would be unacceptable to him.

Kalu, however, maintained support for President Tinubu’s administration, noting that his comments were based on his personal convictions and commitment to the values he associates with the Catholic faith.

His remarks come amid recent conversations over comments and positions taken by Catholic leaders on national issues, including governance, economic hardship and social challenges affecting Nigerians.

Political observers said Kalu’s statement highlights the influence of religious sentiments in Nigeria’s political space, where faith based organisations often play important roles in public discussions and community mobilisation.

The APC chieftain’s position is expected to generate further debate within political circles, especially as parties begin preparations and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
