Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have expressed support for the former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, and Catholic bishops following recent debates over the role of religious leaders in national affairs.

The two opposition figures defended the right of Catholic leaders to speak on issues affecting Nigerians, stressing that religious institutions have historically contributed to discussions on governance, social justice and public welfare.

Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said voices from respected institutions such as the Catholic Church should be viewed as contributions toward improving society rather than political opposition. He maintained that constructive criticism remains important in any democratic system.

Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, also supported the position of the Catholic leaders, emphasising the need for Nigerians to respect diverse views and encourage conversations that promote national development.

The reactions followed comments by Cardinal Onaiyekan and Catholic bishops on issues of national concern, including economic challenges, governance and the wellbeing of citizens.

The development has generated discussions within political circles, especially as parties and potential contenders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Supporters of the bishops argue that religious leaders have a responsibility to speak on issues affecting the people, while critics believe such interventions should be carefully balanced.

Political analysts noted that the growing debate reflects the increasing influence of religious institutions in Nigeria’s public affairs and the role of faith leaders in shaping national conversations.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum, issues around governance, accountability and public welfare are expected to remain central to political discussions across the country.
