Olatoye Falls Short of Medal as Nigeria’s Athletics Campaign Continues in Glasgow

Nigerian hammer thrower Sade Olatoye narrowly missed out on a podium finish after delivering a spirited performance in the women’s hammer throw event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Olatoye, one of Nigeria’s leading field athletes, battled against a strong field of competitors but was unable to secure a medal despite producing a series of determined throws during the final.

The experienced thrower entered the competition with high expectations following her impressive performances on the international circuit, but the fierce contest saw the medals claimed by athletes who produced superior distances on the day.

Although disappointed to miss the podium, Olatoye’s performance contributed valuable points to Team Nigeria’s overall athletics campaign as the country continues its pursuit of a strong finish at the Games.

The National Sports Commission remains optimistic that Nigeria’s athletics team can still deliver a significant medal haul, with several track and field events yet to be decided.

Team Nigeria’s medal hopes now rest on a number of star athletes, including world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi, and other leading competitors expected to challenge for podium finishes in their respective events.

Officials expressed confidence that the setback would not affect the team’s morale, noting that the athletes remain focused on achieving the country’s ambitious medal target before the Games conclude.

With several finals still ahead, Nigeria will be aiming to bounce back quickly and strengthen its position on the Commonwealth Games medal table through strong performances across the remaining athletics events.
