Abuja – Investigations into an alleged coup plot have revealed claims that suspected plotters planned to recruit repentant Boko Haram members and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operatives as part of efforts to strengthen their network, according to security sources familiar with the matter.
The alleged recruitment plan was said to be aimed at exploiting the experience and local knowledge of former insurgents and community-based security volunteers in the North-East, where years of counter-insurgency operations have shaped the region’s security landscape.
Sources close to the investigation reportedly indicated that the suspects considered engaging individuals with knowledge of difficult terrains and local communities to support their activities. However, security agencies are said to be investigating the extent of the alleged connections and the identities of individuals who may have been approached.
The development comes amid continued efforts by Nigerian security agencies to monitor and disrupt activities capable of threatening national stability and public order.
Repentant insurgents under government-led rehabilitation programmes have previously been encouraged to abandon violence and reintegrate into society, while Civilian JTF members have played a significant role in supporting security operations against terrorist groups in parts of the North-East.
