Auto Manufacturers, Regulators Back Summit on EV and CNG Transition

Leading automobile manufacturers, industry regulators and key stakeholders have thrown their support behind an upcoming summit focused on accelerating Nigeria’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG), signalling growing momentum for cleaner and more sustainable transportation.

The summit is expected to bring together policymakers, vehicle manufacturers, energy providers, financial institutions and technology experts to explore practical strategies for expanding the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles and strengthening the country’s automotive industry.

Stakeholders say the event comes at a critical time as Nigeria intensifies efforts to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel following recent energy reforms. Discussions will focus on developing charging and refuelling infrastructure, promoting local vehicle assembly, attracting investment and creating policies that encourage the adoption of electric and CNG-powered vehicles.

Industry leaders believe the transition offers significant economic and environmental benefits, including lower transportation costs, reduced carbon emissions and improved energy security. They also stressed the need for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors to address challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, financing constraints and consumer awareness.

Regulators reaffirmed their commitment to creating an enabling environment that supports innovation, investment and sustainable mobility. They noted that clear regulatory frameworks and incentives would be essential to driving long-term growth in the sector.

Analysts say the summit could serve as a catalyst for Nigeria’s clean transport agenda by fostering partnerships and identifying solutions that will accelerate the shift to alternative energy vehicles. They added that a successful transition would not only modernise the automotive industry but also contribute to economic diversification, job creation and a more resilient energy future.
