The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) over its call for the removal of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, following the death of Engineer Habila Josiah, describing the demand as hasty and unwarranted.
In a statement issued on Friday, NANS said the call for Umahi’s removal was premature, stressing that no individual should be held responsible until the relevant authorities conclude investigations into the circumstances surrounding the engineer’s death.
The student body maintained that while the death of Engineer Habila Josiah is unfortunate and deserves a thorough investigation, it is inappropriate to politicize the incident or apportion blame without credible evidence.
NANS urged the Northern Youth Council and other stakeholders to exercise restraint and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out an impartial investigation, emphasizing that justice can only be achieved through due process.
The association also extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late engineer, calling on the Federal Government to ensure a transparent investigation and hold anyone found culpable accountable in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, NANS urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid statements capable of creating unnecessary tension or undermining public confidence in the ongoing investigative process.
