The Federal Government has approved the design and procurement of two major dual carriageway projects aimed at improving regional connectivity and boosting economic activities across the South East, Daily Independent reports.

The approval followed a series of engagements between the Anambra State Government and the Federal Government, culminating in a meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, on July 1.

Following the meeting, the Federal Ministry of Works requested formal documentation on priority infrastructure corridors in the region. Governor Soludo subsequently submitted two strategic proposals on July 3, both of which have now received presidential approval.

The approved projects include the 108 kilometre Otuocha, Anam, Abaji Road, which will be dualised, and the 150 kilometre Oba, Nnewi, Uga, Ihube (Okigwe Junction) Road. The second corridor will connect Anambra and Imo states to the Enugu, Port Harcourt Expressway while passing through parts of Abia State.

According to Daily Independent, Governor Soludo said the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, communicated President Tinubu’s approval for both projects to proceed to the design and procurement stages on July 15.

The governor explained that the highways are expected to serve as strategic transport corridors linking the South East with the North Central and South South regions, thereby strengthening regional integration.

He said the projects would significantly improve the movement of people, goods and services, reduce travel time and stimulate economic growth across the benefiting states.

Governor Soludo added that the approval underscores the strong collaboration between the Federal Government and the Anambra State Government in delivering critical infrastructure projects that will enhance economic development and improve the welfare of citizens across the region.
