The Impacthive Centre for Accountability, Democracy and Rights (ICADAR) has condemned the killing of Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka in Katsina State, calling on security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
The cleric was shot dead alongside his associate, Adamu Abubakar, by suspected gunmen outside his residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area on Monday evening, October 26.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Bello Ishaq, ICADAR described Masussuka as a respected religious leader who promoted peace, interfaith dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among people of different religious and community backgrounds.
The organisation said his death was a significant loss to his family, congregation and the wider community, stressing that disagreements or grievances could never justify taking a human life.
ICADAR urged the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing promptly and impartially and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable through due process.
The organisation also called on community leaders and residents to uphold the values of tolerance and mutual respect that the late cleric promoted, warning against allowing the killing to deepen divisions.
The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the deaths and said investigations are underway, with tactical teams deployed to track down the suspected perpetrators.
The incident has renewed attention to the protection of religious leaders and the need for credible investigations into violent attacks. A transparent process could help establish responsibility and maintain public confidence in the authorities’ response.
