The Adamawa State Government has intensified its environmental sanitation campaign as part of proactive measures to prevent flooding and promote cleaner communities across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mohammed Sadiq Wali, disclosed this during an inspection of refuse evacuation activities at Doubeli Bypass in Yola North Local Government Area, conducted alongside the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.
According to the commissioner, the government is strengthening routine sanitation efforts to reduce the risk of flooding, protect lives and property, and improve environmental health, especially during the rainy season.
Mohammed Sadiq Wali announced that all 21 Local Government Chairmen have been directed to identify and designate approved refuse disposal sites within their respective councils. He explained that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will assess each proposed site to ensure it meets environmental and public health standards.
The commissioner further revealed that discussions are at an advanced stage with the Norwegian Government on a partnership to transform waste dumps into recycling centres, a move expected to convert waste into valuable economic resources while promoting sustainable waste management.
As part of broader environmental health initiatives, he also disclosed plans to train women on the production of mosquito repellents, describing the programme as a strategy to improve public health while creating livelihood opportunities.
He called on residents to support government efforts by regularly desilting drainage channels, disposing of waste only at designated collection points, and maintaining clean homes and business premises to reduce the risk of flooding and disease outbreaks.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Yola South Local Government Area, Salihu Usman Malkohi, pledged the council’s commitment to implementing Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s directive by establishing at least one approved refuse disposal site in each ward of the local government.
The initiative is expected to be replicated across all 21 local government areas as part of the state’s comprehensive strategy to strengthen environmental sanitation, improve waste management, and reduce flood risks across Adamawa
