The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old suspected drug dealer and rescued a 14-year-old boy allegedly used to deliver suspected illicit drugs to customers.

The suspect, identified as Samuel Ogochukwu, was arrested on Monday, October 26, following an operation by the command’s Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU).

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that operatives intercepted the teenager at about 11 a.m. while he was allegedly delivering a small quantity of a whitish substance suspected to be methamphetamine, commonly known as Ice.

According to the police, the boy, identified as Samuel Nkemakolan Kosi, told investigators that Ogochukwu had sent him to deliver the substance to a customer. Detectives subsequently traced and arrested the suspect.

A search of his shop and residence reportedly led to the recovery of 3.5 grammes of suspected methamphetamine, 17 sachets of tramadol capsules, five sachets of pregabalin capsules, seven sachets of diazepam and other substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly told investigators that he received drug supplies through waybills from Onitsha, Anambra State.

The police said the teenager was being handled in line with juvenile protection procedures and would be reunited with his family after counselling. The suspect is expected to be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.

The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the officers involved and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating drug-related offences.

The case raises concerns about the exploitation of children in illicit drug distribution. Using minors as couriers can expose them to dangerous substances, criminal networks and potential legal consequences. Protecting vulnerable children therefore requires effective law enforcement alongside family support, counselling and community awareness.

The incident highlights the danger of involving children in drug distribution and the need to protect young people from exploitation by criminal networks. Beyond arresting suspected offenders, tackling the problem requires effective law enforcement, parental guidance, public awareness and support for vulnerable children. The rescue of the teenager also underscores the importance of treating minors involved in criminal activities as potential victims of exploitation who may need protection and rehabilitation, alongside appropriate legal procedures.
