Spain have rewarded Luis de la Fuente’s remarkable run with the national team by extending his contract through 2032, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Monday.
The new agreement will keep De la Fuente in charge through the 2028 and 2032 European Championships, as well as the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The 65-year-old took over as Spain coach in 2022 following the departure of Luis Enrique and has since guided La Roja to a remarkable run of success.
Under De la Fuente, Spain won the 2023 UEFA Nations League, lifted the EURO 2024 trophy and most recently claimed the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The coach had previously spent around a decade working within Spain’s youth national-team setup before making the step up to the senior side.
RFEF confirmed the extension in a statement, saying De la Fuente would remain in charge for the next two European Championships and the 2030 World Cup.
RFEF board chairman Rafael Louzán praised the coach’s achievements and his long association with Spanish football.
“We’re talking about the most successful head coach in the history of the national team,” Louzán said, adding that after 14 years with the federation, De la Fuente deserved “a long-term future at the RFEF.”
The contract extension comes as Spain prepare to return to competitive action following their World Cup triumph in July.
Their first assignment will be a high-profile Nations League meeting with England at Wembley on September 26.
Three days later, Spain will return home to face Croatia in Seville as their Nations League campaign continues.
De la Fuente’s side will then host Czechia in Oviedo on October 3 before travelling to Croatia for another meeting with the European side on October 6.
With Spain entering another Nations League campaign as world champions, De la Fuente now has a long-term mandate to continue developing the team and competing for major international honours.
